SSL certificate / HTTPS
An SSL/TLS certificate encrypts the data sent between a visitor and the site, so no one along the way can read or change it. It is what provides "https" and the padlock in the browser address bar.
Today HTTPS is the standard: no certificate results in a "site not secure" warning, worse Google rankings and lost trust. Certificates should also be renewed on time, an expired one has the same effect as none at all.
