Why your site is slow (and how much it costs you)
The statistics are merciless: if a site takes longer than three seconds to load, more than half of visitors close it before it even appears. Those are customers you paid for in advertising, who have just gone to the competition.
The most common causes of a slow site
In our experience the culprit usually belongs to one of these groups:
- Heavy, unoptimised images uploaded straight from the camera.
- Too many plugins, half of which are no longer used.
- Cheap shared hosting with a hundred other sites.
- No cache, so every page loads from scratch.
Where to start
The good news: most of these problems can be solved without rebuilding the whole site.
Before you spend money on new hosting or a new site, it is worth checking what really slows the current one down. Often a few well-aimed fixes are enough.
Optimisation is one of the things we handle as part of ongoing care, we regularly check speed and react before your customers notice a slowdown.
