Speed up your site, 7 things that make a real difference

Speed up your site, 7 things that make a real difference

In a separate article we explained why a slow site costs you customers. Since you now know it is a problem worth money, let us get to the specifics: what genuinely speeds up a business site. Not every one of these applies to you, but usually a few of them are enough to make a noticeable difference.

1. Optimise images

This is the first and most common cause of slow sites. Photos straight from a camera or stock library can weigh several megabytes each, while a fraction of that would be enough on the site. The solution: reducing the resolution to what is actually needed, and compression plus modern formats (WebP). This one thing alone often doubles a site's speed.

2. Enable cache

Cache is a mechanism that means the site is not built from scratch on every visit, but served from a ready, saved version. The effect can be spectacular, the site loads noticeably faster. In WordPress or Joomla, the right plugin or server configuration handles this.

3. Reduce the number of plugins and add-ons

Every plugin adds something, its code, styles, scripts. A dozen unnecessary add-ons can load the site more than all the rest. Review the list and remove what you do not use. Less means faster (and safer).

4. Get good hosting

Even a perfectly optimised site will be slow on an overloaded, cheap server. If you have done everything else and the site still crawls, the bottleneck is often the hosting. Sometimes the best investment in speed is simply a better server.

5. Clean and optimise the database

Over time the database fills with junk: old post revisions, spam, data from removed plugins. Regular cleanups mean the site reaches what it needs faster.

6. Reduce and combine files (CSS, JS)

A site loads many style and script files. Their minification (removing unnecessary characters) and combining reduces the number and size of what the browser has to download. It is a more technical change, but it gives a measurable effect.

7. Consider a CDN

A CDN is a network of servers scattered around the world that serves your site from the location nearest the visitor. For sites with traffic from beyond one city or country it can noticeably shorten load time and, at the same time, offload your server.

A practical rule: start with images and cache. Those two things give the biggest speed jump for the least effort.

You do not have to do it yourself

Some of these things are simple, some require looking under the hood of the site. If your site is slow and you do not want to guess the cause, we will check it for you and make the fixes that genuinely speed it up, without breaking what works. Before you start, run the free website speed test, it will show what slows it down most. Get in touch.
