Zero-day (0-day flaw)

A zero-day is a flaw that attackers learn about (and exploit) before an official patch exists. The name means the vendor had "zero days" to react.

In practice it means a window in which the system cannot be patched, all that remains is reducing risk (for example disabling the vulnerable component, firewall rules) until a fix arrives. That is why fast threat monitoring matters so much.
