Hardening

Hardening is the proactive tightening of a site: updates, strong passwords and 2FA, security headers, removing unused plugins, limiting privileges, backups. The point is to make an attack harder and to minimise the damage if one happens anyway.

It is a "layered" approach, no single thing gives 100% protection, but together they form a barrier that filters out the vast majority of automated attacks.
