Changing hosting without losing your Google rankings, how to do it right

The decision to change hosting often comes from good sense, the current one is slow, unreliable or expensive. And then the fear appears: "but what if the site goes down during the move or drops in Google?". That is a real risk, but with a well-planned migration both can be practically eliminated. It comes down to the order and to not cutting corners.

Two fears that can be defused

First: downtime. Nobody wants customers hitting an error during the move. Second: a drop in Google rankings. There is a myth that moving a site "resets SEO". Untrue, as long as the page addresses stay the same and the move is done cleanly, Google will not even notice the server change. Trouble only starts with mistakes: mixed-up addresses, missing redirects or an incomplete copy.

What a safe migration looks like: step by step

• 1. A full backup before you start. Before you touch anything, a complete set of files and the database. It is your point of return if something goes wrong.
• 2. Setting the site up on the new server "alongside". The site is launched and tested on the new host before traffic is directed there. The old version keeps working for visitors the whole time.
• 3. Thorough tests on the new server. Everything is checked: pages, forms, cart, login, email, appearance. Only when the new version works flawlessly do you move on.
• 4. Switching the domain (DNS) at a convenient moment. Ideally outside peak traffic. Set correctly, visitors smoothly reach the new server, with no visible break.
• 5. Keeping the same addresses and redirects. This is crucial for SEO: the same page addresses = preserved rankings. If something must change, redirects (301) are set so nothing "gets lost" along the way.
• 6. Forcing HTTPS and checking the certificate on the new server, so the site does not fall into a "not secure" warning.
• 7. Monitoring after the migration. For a few days you keep an eye on whether everything works and whether Google visits the site correctly.

The most important migration rule: we test the new server until it is right, before we direct traffic there. The domain is switched only once the new version is verified and ready.

The most common mistakes that cost rankings

Problems almost always come from haste: switching the domain before the new site is ready; an incomplete copy of the database (the latest posts or orders disappear); skipping redirects when addresses change; or a forgotten SSL certificate. Each of these mistakes is avoidable, you just have to not cut corners.
