A website builder (Wix and similar) or WordPress? What to choose for a business
You are setting up a business site and face a choice: a builder (like Wix, Squarespace or hosting builders) or WordPress? It is a real decision that echoes for years. There is no single "right" answer here, both paths make sense in different situations. Let us lay it out calmly, without dogma.
Builders: simple and fast
Builders are "drag and drop" platforms: you build the site in your browser, arranging ready-made blocks. Everything, the site, hosting, updates, is in one place, with one provider.
Advantages:
- An easy start: without technical knowledge you can put up a simple site over a weekend.
- All in one: you do not worry about hosting, updates or security; the provider does it.
- A predictable cost: one monthly or yearly fee.
Disadvantages:
- Limited freedom: you can only do as much as the platform allows. Unusual features can be out of reach.
- Dependence on the provider: the site lives on someone else's platform. It is hard (or impossible) to take it away in full. Prices rise or rules change? Your hands are tied.
- You pay always and forever: stop paying, and the site disappears.
WordPress: freedom and independence
WordPress is the world's most popular site-building system. You install it on your own hosting, under your own domain, and have control over everything.
Advantages:
- Enormous flexibility: practically any look and features, from a brochure site to a full-blown shop. Thousands of themes and plugins.
- Independence: the site is yours, on your hosting. You can move it, expand it, change contractor. You are not a hostage to one company.
- No "subscription for existing": WordPress itself is free; you pay for hosting and the domain, which are yours anyway.
- It scales with the business: the site can grow with you, without moving to another platform.
Disadvantages:
- It needs care: updates, backups, security are on you (or someone who handles it). That is at the same time the source of its strength, full control.
- A slightly higher entry threshold: more elements to manage at the start.
To simplify: a builder is a rented, serviced flat, comfortable, but on someone else's terms. WordPress is your own premises, more responsibility, but it is yours and you can do what you want with it.
When each makes sense
- A builder can be sensible when you need a very simple site right now, the budget is minimal, and you do not plan to expand or care about full independence.
- WordPress is usually the better choice for a business thinking long-term: one that wants to own its site, plans to grow (a shop, a blog, new features) and cares about independence from a single platform.
Most important: do not build on rented ground
If there is one thing worth remembering, it is this: the more seriously you take your online presence, the more it pays to own your site. A builder can be a good start, but a growing business sooner or later appreciates the control and independence of its own site under its own domain.
