How to choose hosting for a business site (and tell when to change it)

People usually think about hosting once, when setting up the site, and then never again. Yet it decides whether the site is fast, whether it works stably and how quickly you get help when something breaks. It is the foundation everything else stands on. It is worth knowing what to look at.

What to actually pay attention to

  • Speed and resources. The cheapest shared plans cram hundreds of sites onto one server. The result: when a neighbour has traffic, your site slows down. For a business site it is worth choosing a plan with sensible resources, ideally on SSD/NVMe drives.
  • Technical support in your language. In a crisis (the site is down, something is not working) what matters is whether you can reach someone who will help, and how fast. Check what hours and channel support operates on.
  • Backups as standard. Good hosting makes its own backups and lets you restore the site easily. It does not free you from your own backups, but it can be a lifesaver.
  • An SSL certificate in the price. Free Let's Encrypt with automatic renewal should be standard. Do not pay separately for something a good provider includes.
  • A suitable PHP version and technologies. The server should offer current versions of PHP and the database, old versions mean a slower and less secure site.
  • Real terms, not just the starting price. Check the renewal price (often much higher than the first year), the limits and what happens when you exceed the plan.

Hosting is not the place to save the last penny. A difference of a few zloty a month can mean the difference between a site that loads in a second and one that crawls and regularly goes down.

How to tell it is time to move

There are a few signals that your current host is holding you back:

  • the site regularly slows down or is unavailable, even though you changed nothing in it,
  • support does not help or replies after a few days,
  • the server offers only old PHP versions and they cannot be changed,
  • you get limit-exceeded messages under normal traffic,
  • the renewal price shot up, but the quality did not.

Changing hosting sounds scary, but it does not have to be

Many site owners stay with poor hosting for one reason: they fear that during the move the site will stop working or drop in Google. That is a justified worry, but with a well-executed migration both can be eliminated. The key is the order of actions and checking everything before switching.

We will help choose and move

If you do not know whether your hosting is suitable, or suspect it is slowing the site down, we can check and advise, without pushing a specific company. And if you decide to change, we will carry out the migration so the site does not suffer for a moment. Get in touch.
