An abandoned plugin, a quiet problem you will not notice

Plugins update so smoothly that it is easy to believe it "takes care of itself". But there is a category of add-ons that will never get another update, and yet keep running quietly on your site.

What it is about

A plugin can disappear from the official WordPress.org directory in several ways: the author abandons it, stops developing it, or the WordPress team removes it because of a discovered flaw. In each of these cases the plugin keeps working on your site, except the "update" button will never appear, because there is nowhere left to download the fix from.

The worst case: the plugin was removed precisely because it has a hole. You do not know about it, but the attackers do.

Why it is sneaky

The panel does not shout. The plugin does not display "I am abandoned". It looks like any other, it just quietly rots. Statistics say there are thousands of plugins in the WordPress directory that have not been updated in years, and many are still running on live sites.

What to do

  • Check when each plugin was last updated. No changes in 2-3 years is a warning sign.
  • Check whether the plugin still exists in the WordPress.org directory. If it is gone, look for a replacement.
  • Remove what you do not use. An inactive plugin can still be vulnerable.

Catching abandoned and removed plugins is one of the first items in our site review, see what care looks like.
